Municipal Cinema Nights Bring Ricaurte Families Together

Municipal Cinema Nights Bring Ricaurte Families Together

RICAURTE, CUNDINAMARCA — In an effort to strengthen social bonds, promote early literacy, and provide wholesome entertainment, the Municipal Government of Ricaurte (Alcaldía de Ricaurte), alongside its local public library network, has launched “Una Noche de Película en Familia” (A Family Movie Night).

The initiative—spearheaded by the municipal social development team, local cultural coordinators, and the public library system—transforms local public spaces, parks, and community centers into open-air movie theaters. By providing free access to family-friendly cinema, interactive workshops, and educational story sessions, municipal leaders aim to offer local children and parents an accessible alternative for recreation while encouraging reading and cultural participation.

Fostering Social Cohesion Through Local Arts

The program is designed as a multi-generational experience. Beyond broadcasting animated feature films and educational movies, each screening is paired with pre-show activities led by local librarians and recreation specialists. Children are invited to participate in story-building exercises, interactive games, and art workshops before settling in for the evening’s feature.

Local municipal officials emphasize that initiatives like Noche de Película en Familia serve a deeper social purpose beyond basic entertainment. In many regional neighborhoods and rural sectors (veredas), access to commercial movie theaters can be limited due to transportation barriers or expense. By bringing projection screens, sound equipment, and organized activities directly to community plazas and local venues, the municipality ensures equitable access to cultural programming for all residents.

“Culture and recreation are essential pillars of healthy childhood development and strong family units,” noted representatives from the local administration. “When we create safe, welcoming spaces where families can gather, laugh, and learn together, we are investing directly in the social fabric of Ricaurte.”

Integrating Literacy with Media

A unique aspect of the municipal initiative is the central role played by the local public library (Biblioteca Pública Municipal). By linking cinema to literature, organizers use popular films as entry points for reading comprehension and creative expression.

Before each screening, library staff lead short reading sessions featuring books related to the film’s themes, encouraging young viewers to explore storytelling across different media. Mobile library units (ludotecas itinerantes) often accompany the cinema setup, allowing children to register for library cards, borrow books, and explore educational games right in their neighborhood centers.

The strategy reflects a growing trend across Cundinamarca municipalities to modernize public libraries, moving them beyond traditional quiet study rooms into dynamic community hubs that actively outreach to youth.

Resident feedback across participating neighborhoods has been overwhelmingly positive. Community leaders highlight how evening outdoor events give working parents a chance to unwind alongside their children in safe, organized environments close to home.

As the municipal government continues expanding its cultural roster across urban neighborhoods and rural sectors, “Noche de Película en Familia” remains a cornerstone of Ricaurte’s broader strategy for social inclusion, youth development, and community welfare.
