GIRARDOT — National headlines have hit close to home this week as Colombian authorities investigate international bolero star Charlie Zaa over alleged ties to former paramilitary forces—a probe that lands right in the heart of Girardot’s commercial district.

According to a report by Semana magazine, Zaa—born Carlos Alberto Sánchez Ramírez—is under investigation for allegedly serving as a frontman for the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) Tolima Bloc. The case involves an estimated $6 million in illicit money laundering and asset management.

The Girardot Connection: El Oasis Commercial Center

For local residents, the most striking detail of the investigation involves El Oasis, a familiar shopping center in downtown Girardot known for hosting major nightlife venues.

Confessions given during Colombia’s Justice and Peace transitional justice hearings explicitly link local real estate to AUC operations. Former demobilized combatants claim Zaa acted as a proxy owner for several commercial assets in the region, including properties within El Oasis designed to channel funds and support relatives of deceased paramilitary leaders.

According to sworn testimony cited by the Prosecutor General’s Office, one demobilized AUC member recalled:

“We were at a shopping center in Girardot called El Oasis. Later, in prison, I learned it belonged to Charlie Zaa. Daniel told me that three of the locations inside were for the children of Elías… Every month, I delivered one million pesos to someone who said he was Elías’ nephew.”

Another former paramilitary member stated that property purchases in downtown Girardot were made directly under the singer’s name to manage group finances, questioning the massive sums of money transferred through those transactions.

Broader Network in Tolima

The investigation extends beyond Girardot into neighboring Ibagué, pointing to popular nightlife spots like the Kapachos and Solaris nightclubs.

Former AUC member Ricaurte Soria testified that Zaa maintained a close relationship with Daniel Goyeneche (known as “Comandante Daniel”), a former leader of the Tolima Bloc, dating back to 2000. Testimonies allege that representatives regularly visited detained commanders in Bogotá to deliver financial accounts tied to these nightlife establishments.

As judicial authorities continue to parse through the testimonies from the Justice and Peace process, the investigation places a spotlight on how local commercial hubs in Girardot and Tolima were allegedly utilized during the height of the region’s conflict.
